Just over two weeks ago, I asked my friend to help organise her family to join me for an escape game at Breakout Avenue K. As she has many nephews and nieces, it wasn’t too difficult to persuade them to come for a game. Those who are below 20 years of age are bound to be much more enthusiastic and put in more effort than people my age!

At the last minute, my friend who was supposed to join the group couldn’t make it due to work issues but she managed to get 7 members of her family to join me for Post Mortem, the latest game at Breakout Avenue K. I’d spoken to one of the staff prior to booking this game and she informed me that out of 10 groups who went for this game, only 1 group succeeds. At least there wouldn’t be any scary elements. After all, there were young teens joining.

Our game was in the afternoon and the kids were in high spirits. We were briefed about the characters we could take on, each participant could choose a character. For example, there’s Assassin, Time Bender, The Scholar, The Gemini, The Lightbringer, Healer, The Oracle and LockMaster. All the characters have a special ability that can aid in the progress of the game. You’d need someone with a good memory to be The Scholar as that character is given the ability to look into the room and know the level of difficulty and physical requirement of the puzzles. It’s also includes the total number puzzles to be solved.

Post Mortem story :

A few nights before Christmas, the city of Kansas was rocked by several cases of violent homicides taking place inside the city’s post office. The double murders have claimed the lives of 2 employees. The lack of clues and seemingly random killings have baffled investigators and the Special Crimes Unit was engaged to help. Being officers of the unit, you were assigned to crack this enigma before the killer’s next strike.

The objective of this game is not to escape from the room unlike the other Breakout games I played years ago at this outlet and at their Nu Sentral outlet. The objective of Post Mortem is to discover the identity of the killer in 45 minutes with an extension of 5 minutes should extra time be needed.

We entered a dark room which looked like an office and began searching for the 1st clue. It took us 20 minutes before we realised we were really running out of time. It’s not that easy at all and we had to call for help – ask for the 1st clue otherwise we would not be able to proceed to the 2nd room. We weren’t given a stopwatch so no way of knowing when we would run out of time unless we asked reception.

The younger children were excited and super enthusiastic. I liked watching them trying their best to look for clues. We were given a small torch held by The Lightbringer character. The room is quite small and all 8 of us had to manoeuvre around each other as we searched and searched.

Time began to run out, we had to make a wild guess on the identity of the killer based on what little we managed to discover in the 2nd room. Too bad, our guess was wrong! It was someone we wouldn’t have guessed since we didn’t uncover the clue to lead to that person!

The main thing is everyone had a blast especially the younger kids who couldn’t stop talking about it to their aunt who wasn’t one of the participants. Loved seeing them so happy.
