Inaugural Malaysian Ophthalmology Scientific Congress 2025 Ushers in a New Era for Vision Health

The highly anticipated Malaysian Ophthalmology Scientific Congress (MOSC) 2025 officially commenced today with an inspiring opening ceremony at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. This landmark event marks the beginning of transformative discourse aimed at advancing the landscape of eye care across Malaysia.

With the theme “United We Stand: One Vision for Malaysia,” the congress brings together a distinguished assembly of professionals from both public and private healthcare sectors. Key collaborators include the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH), Malaysian Universities Conjoint Committee of Ophthalmology (MUCCO), Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology (MSO), College of Ophthalmologists, Academy of Medicine Malaysia (COAMM), and the Malaysian Armed Forces’ Ophthalmology Services.

The congress was officially inaugurated by YB Dato’ Seri Dr. Wan Azizah binti Dr. Wan Ismail, the esteemed Guest of Honour and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement in Ophthalmology 2025 Award. In her keynote address, she remarked:

“This congress represents a historic milestone in our nation’s ophthalmic journey— a testament to what can be achieved through unity and a shared vision. As ophthalmologists, we are privileged to restore one of life’s most precious gifts—the ability to see the faces of loved ones, the beauty of our country, and the promise of tomorrow.”

The event celebrates Malaysia’s significant strides in vision health, underscored by the presence of 897 registered ophthalmologists, structured postgraduate training, and community outreach programs such as Klinik Katarak KKM, all contributing to a measurable decline in preventable blindness. Findings from the National Eye Survey III (2023) revealed a remarkable drop in blindness prevalence—from 1.6% to 0.8% in east coast states of Malaysia and 2.1% to 0.6% in Sarawak.

Malaysia’s growing international presence in Ophthalmology was also highlighted, including the successful hosting of major global events like the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress and the World Congress of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WCPOS). The nation’s contributions to international clinical trials and initiatives, such as the WHO/IAPB Meeting on Cataract Surgery Outcomes (2018), further reinforce its role as a global collaborator in vision care.

Additionally, the congress showcases achievements in ophthalmic education, including the implementation of the National Ophthalmology Postgraduate Curriculum (2022)—a strategic move to cultivate a future-ready, skilled ophthalmic workforce aligned with national healthcare objectives. With representation from across Malaysia and esteemed international delegates in attendance, MOSC 2025 is poised to become a cornerstone event in Malaysia’s healthcare calendar—driving forward innovation, research, and professional unity in the field of ophthalmology.
