Make-up Tips And Demo By Monica Lee At Artistry’s “True Science, True Beauty” Event

Make-up Demo In Progress (thank goodness for the big screen)

One of the much-anticipated programmes of Artistry’s “True Science, True Beauty” event at MidValley Exhibition Centre from 1-3 April was the make-up demo by Monica Lee, renowned make-up artist and owner of MonicaLee Face Art Academy. She is a regular feature at the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week (KLFW) every year and was named best Make-up Artist by Mercedes Benz at the Malaysian International Fashion Awards in 2004.

As the make-up demo was too far from where I was seated, I was unable to get a close-up shot of the model’s face. It’s a good thing there was a big screen for us to observe each step of the makeover process. The room was crowded with observers who were eager to pick up some make-up tips.

Here are some tips from Monica Lee:-

(1) Concealer

Choose a concealer 2 tones lighter than your foundation and focus on eye bags area. Cover imperfections and unevenness. Apply with a brush or fingers in a dabbing motion. Use concealer as a highlighter on T-zone, above chin area and middle of chin.

(2) Foundation

When applying foundation, use a brush rather than a sponge and apply only where needed.

(3) Powder

Powder is the most important make-up for base makeup. Do not apply too much powder, brush off excess on back of hand to avoid the cakey look. Make sure there are no lines on eye crease/eye bags area.

(4) Lip Gloss

Use a lip gloss for moist-looking lips and only on middle of lips. Too much gloss creates smudges at the ends of the lips.

(5) Eyeliner

Using Artistry’s brown kohl pencil in “Golden Chestnut” , draw a thin line close to lashes. Use a small brush to blend the colour into the eyelid. Apply eyeshadow over eyeliner to set eyeliner otherwise eyeliner will melt in less than an hour in humid weather.

(6) Eyeshadows

Use a brown eyeshadow palette for a natural look and to give the impression of deepset eyes especially for Oriental eyes. Brown colour is closest to skin colour and doesn’t look like you’re using a lot of eyeshadow. Blend evenly.

(6) Mascara

Apply 2-3 layers, wait for one side to dry and then reapply. Brush lashes down, then gently up.

(7) Eyebrow Pencil

Use a very natural brown colour and use an eyebrow brush to blend the colour downwards.

(8) Blusher

Apply blusher last to see the overall balance. Apply after lipstick.

Monica Lee & The Model

Monica Lee used a mineral water spray to spritz the face after completing the make-up so that make-up will not look dry and have a moist effect for 2-3 hours.
