One of the judges for the recent Next Generation Innovations hosted by acclaimed leading international education specialist, Study Group was Miss Prabha, Head of Education, British Council Malaysia. I sat down for a brief interview with her at the conclusion of the competition.
What are your impressions of the finalists of the Next Generation Innovations competition and their submissions?
Miss Prabha: I was blown away by the quality of the submissions. the depth of quality, diversity and passion shown by the participants.
What do you think the participants have gained from this competition?
Miss Prabha: There were 50 submissions from young people who think outside the box, and who addressed issues close to their heart. They have researched into coming up with solutions of getting to that point, consulted people into coming up with business models. They have thought about what they need to make it a reality, bringing in potential investors like (the British reality tv business program) “Dragons’ Den”. They have taken feedback from the judges. Everything has the potential to take off, their ideas have evolved and made even better and shaped further.
What qualities will the participants take from this competition to university?
Miss Prabha: They have presented their ideas on paper, those shortlisted had to pitch their ideas in front of the judges and were questioned. They knew how to respond & defend themselves before the judges. They’ve developed writing and presentation skills, critical thinking, self-reflection, ideations and confidence.
How does the British Council play a part in preparing these students for education in the UK?
Miss Prabha: Through showcasing UK education and the cultural richness of the UK, working through the English language, arts and culture. This fits in with the British Council’s goal of getting more students and parents to consider making the UK the country to study in. Through the British Council program, we offer guidance to students, hold pre-departure briefings and offer advice on the visa process. We want students to be prepared before they study in the UK and they will be advised on what to pack and finances.
