As we know, makeup makes a huge impact on stage performances as it helps the actors get into character and for us audiences, we can see how makeup transforms someone. For the recent Puteri Gunung Ledang The Concert, MAC Cosmetics was the official makeup sponsor and I had the opportunity to speak to the MAC team on the work involved in creating the looks for The Concert.

How long does it take to do the makeup for each person in Puteri Gunung Ledang The Concert?
Actually the look itself is very fast. It can take 45 minutes to 3 hours to complete a look. We begin 3-4 hours before show call time.
How many looks for the Puteri Gunung Ledang (Tiara’s) character?
For the original PGL, there was only 1 look but for The Concert, there are 3 looks for PGL. The 1st look is with Swarovski crystals stuck one by one, the 2nd look is modern beauty makeup and the 3rd is the original PGL makeup.
Which is the strongest look?
The strongest look is the one with the Swarovski crystals and the original PGL look. The challenge was to change the looks within 3 minutes.
What’s the base makeup for the PGL character?
We used ProLongwear Foundation & Concealer, no setting or translucent powder. ProLongwear is long-lasting. ProLongwear Mixing Medium fixes products on to the face. We use ProLongwear Mixing Medium with eye shadow and pigments for more long-lasting effect.
What products were used for Hang Tuah?
ProLongwear Foundation, Studio Finish Concealer set with Studio Fix Powder. A bit of contouring and lined the bottom of the eyes in black.
What products were used for the Sultan of Majapahit?
Matte finishing Studio Fix Foundation with Studio Perfect Powder.
What products were used for the Sultan of Melaka?
Fix+ and ProLongwear Foundation & ProLongwear Concealer. For contouring, Pro Palette, set with Studio Fix Powder.
You have used a lot of ProLongwear products. What are the benefits?
ProLongwear is good when you don’t have much time to change the makeup. The cast need time to rest and eat. With ProLongwear, we just tone down some of the colours, e.g. eye shadow is the same but we just change the lip & blush colours.
What products were used for Bayan?
Ida Mariana’s complexion was more tanned than normal with Face & Body Foundation. We also used ProLongwear Foundation and set it with powder for a matte look. To highlight, we used Red Red Red Soft Pink Beauty Powder and glitter. We used Paint Pot as base, Prep + Prime 24-hour Extend Eye Base and glitter. We lined the eyes in a cat’s eye shape.
What time does the MAC team arrive to prepare?
11am-12pm for the matinee and 5pm for the evening performance.
