Madam Kwan’s Celebrates A Legacy Of Trust And Taste With Two Significant Milestones

Madam Kwan Swee Lian, the culinary matriarch behind the Madam Kwan’s brand

At the mention of Madam Kwan’s, many Malaysians instantly picture the culinary matriarch behind the brand, recognisable in her large glasses and signature hat, alongside beloved local favourites lovingly prepared from recipes that have stood the test of time. From its signature Nasi Lemak and Char Kway Teow to its iconic Nasi Bojari, the restaurant has built a reputation for serving comforting Malaysian flavours that generations of diners know and love since opening its doors in 1999.

Today, the homegrown restaurant brand celebrates two significant milestones that reflect the legacy it has built over the years, one founded on taste and trust. The occasion marked not only a national recognition by the Malaysia Book of Records for Madam Kwan’s iconic Nasi Bojari, but also the brand’s continued commitment to quality and assurance through the achievement of JAKIM Halal certification across its restaurants.

Created by Madam Kwan Swee Lian herself, Nasi Bojari has remained a signature dish since the restaurant was established. Inspired by a royal-style recipe, the indulgent dish features fragrant tri-coloured rice accompanied by a succulent deep-fried whole chicken leg, tangy assam prawn, tender beef rendang and a hard-boiled egg. It has since become one of Madam Kwan’s most recognisable creations and a favourite among generations of diners.

In recognition of its enduring popularity, Madam Kwan’s was awarded the Malaysia Book of Records title for “Most Nasi Bojari Sold In A Year”, having served an impressive 245,362 plates nationwide.

The award was presented by Malaysia Book of Records Chief Executive Officer, Christopher Wong, to Madam Kwan’s Chief Executive Officer, Datin Maureen Ooi, alongside founder Datuk Rudy Foo and the restaurant’s namesake, 92-year-old Madam Kwan Swee Lian, who made a special appearance at the celebration commemorating the brand’s latest achievements.

The occasion also marked another important milestone as Madam Kwan’s announced that, in addition to its central kitchens, 17 outlets across Peninsular Malaysia have successfully obtained JAKIM Halal certification, with its new outlet at AEON Tebrau, Johor expected to complete certification in due course.

The certification reinforces the brand’s commitment to serving food prepared with quality halal ingredients, proper handling procedures and stringent hygiene standards throughout its operations, giving customers greater confidence every time they dine at Madam Kwan’s.

Datin Maureen Ooi, Chief Executive Officer of Madam Kwan’s, said, “Today’s celebration goes beyond two milestones. It reflects the journey Madam Kwan’s has shared with Malaysians over nearly three decades. The Malaysia Book of Records recognition is a testament to the enduring love for our signature Nasi Bojari, while our JAKIM Halal certification reinforces the trust our customers place in us every day. Together, these achievements reflect what Madam Kwan’s has always stood for, which is a legacy of trust and a taste loved by Malaysians, earned through authenticity, consistency and an uncompromising commitment to quality.”

Building on the culinary legacy established by Madam Kwan Swee Lian, the brand has evolved from a single restaurant into a household name with 20 outlets nationwide with plans to expand further. Under the leadership of her son and founder Datuk Rudy Foo and his wife, Datin Maureen Ooi, Madam Kwan’s has continued to embrace changing consumer lifestyles through food delivery services and an expanding retail range that includes signature cooking pastes, snacks and instant beverage premixes, bringing the flavours of Madam Kwan’s into homes across Malaysia.

Ooi added, “From the very beginning, Madam Kwan’s believed that good food brings people together. Our menu reflects the richness of Malaysia’s multicultural culinary heritage, with recipes prepared from the heart and served with genuine hospitality. While we continue to grow and evolve, our purpose remains unchanged – to preserve the authentic flavours that Malaysians have come to love and create a welcoming place where everyone can come together over a truly Malaysian meal.”

To commemorate these twin milestones, Madam Kwan’s is also launching a dine-in promotion, offering customers the opportunity to win prizes worth up to RM20,000. For three months beginning in September, diners can visit any Madam Kwan’s outlet in Peninsula Malaysia to participate while enjoying the restaurant’s signature Malaysian favourites.
