Against the Old Shanghai backdrop of Sungei Wang Plaza, 12 finalists battled it out recently in the Old Shanghai Golden Melody Singing Competition which was for competitors aged 45 years old and above. They sang songs from yesteryear, vintage songs made popular by songbirds like Zhou Xuan, Rebecca Pan, Bai Guang, Yao Lee and Bai Hong.
Participants had to sing Chinese songs from the Old Shanghai era of 1930s to the 1960s. The Champion received RM5,000 & a trophy while the1st & 2nd Runner-Ups received RM3,000 & RM2,000 & a trophy respectively. Consolation prize winners, 3rd & 4th Runner-Ups received RM1,000 & RM500 & a trophy respectively. There were 3 subsidiary awards for Best Showmanship, Best Dressed & Most Popular and each of them received RM500 worth of shopping vouchers and a trophy.
1st prize : Mr. Lai Kon Swee (52 years old)
2nd prize : Mr. Teow Swee Min (57 years old)
3rd prize : Ms. Ng Kam Fong (54 years old)
4th prize : Ms. Yuen Yuet Hoe (57 years old)
5th prize : Ms. Ng Soo Keow (48 years old)
The contestants were judged on costumes, showmanship, intonation and articulation.
