Taichung Ponkan Back In Malaysia

As the Chinese New Year approaches, the 2026 Taichung Ponkan in Malaysia 2026 Promotional Event returns to Malaysia. Hailing from Taichung, Taiwan, the ponkan mandarins are prized for their sweet, juicy flesh and are a festive staple during the Chinese New Year. This year, the event once again collaborates with well-known Malaysian bakery RT Pastry to launch a limited-edition Ponkan Cheesecake, combining Taiwanese citrus with local baking craftsmanship. The cross-industry collaboration offers Malaysian consumers a fresh and modern way to enjoy Taichung ponkan while celebrating the festive season.

The 2026 Taichung Ponkan in Malaysia 2026 Promotional Event is supported by Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture and the Agriculture Bureau of Taichung City Government while organized by the Shigang District Farmers’ Association of Taichung City. Taichung ponkan mandarins feature an attractive golden-orange peel, a well-balanced sweet-and-tangy taste with high nutritional value, making them long favored in markets such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei. This year, export destinations include Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Canada, with the first shipment of approximately 15 metric tons already delivered to Malaysia.

According to the Agriculture Bureau of Taichung City Government, the region’s abundant rainfall, favorable climate, and suitable soil conditions make it ideal for citrus cultivation. Ponkan orchards cover 1,388 hectares in Taichung, with an annual production exceeding 20,000 metric tons, ranking second nationwide. To ensure food safety, the bureau has long guided farmers in obtaining production traceability certification and continues to enhance quality and brand value through annual ponkan evaluation competitions.

James Chang, Director of the Economic Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, noted that despite weather challenges in 2025 — including low temperatures and typhoons — Taichung ponkan mandarins maintained stable quality and supply. He added that demand for ponkan during the Chinese New Year period in Malaysia often exceeds supply, reflecting strong consumer confidence in Taiwanese agricultural products.

Beyond fresh fruit sales, Taichung ponkan continues to expand its market reach through diversified marketing initiatives. The renewed collaboration with RT Pastry introduces the ponkan cheesecake as a seasonal highlight, appealing especially to younger consumers and families while showcasing innovative uses of the fruit in desserts.

To enhance brand recognition, all Taichung ponkan gift boxes bear the “Taichung City Government Agriculture Bureau Premium Agricultural Products” trademark, ensuring consumer confidence. The products are now available nationwide at Aeon as well as Star Grocer and Whole Foods outlets under Khaishen Trading Sdn. Bhd., positioning them as a premium gifting option for the festive season.

Today’s Taichung Ponkan in Malaysia 2026 Promotional Event was attended by numerous representatives from both Taiwan and Malaysia, including James Chang, Director of the Economic Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia; Sylvia Kao, Director of the Taiwan Trade Center Kuala Lumpur; Liao Ting-Chien, and Fu Yu Chin, Directors of the Shigang District Farmers’ Association of Taichung City; Tsai Hsin Tien, National President of the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Malaysia; Mr Jeffrey Tan, CEO of Khaishen Trading Sdn Bhd; Mr. Lu Chun Neng, CEO of RT Pastry; and representatives from Malaysian fruit distributors. Together, they witnessed the entry of Taichung ponkan into the Malaysian market and expressed hopes for continued growth in sales and market expansion.
