Retail Therapy In Melaka

Every now and then, I like to get away from the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur to the equally hustling and bustling Melaka. This UNESCO World Heritage City now has some rather huge malls comparable to KL’s and I’d feel right at home if I had to live in Melaka for a period of time.

Apart from the ubiquitous pineapple tarts, belacan, gula melaka, dodol and cincalok, the city has also a lot of charming shops selling antiques and beaded slippers. I like exploring Jonker Street for the many shops that sell t-shirts, some with very cute and unusual designs which are unavailable in KL. They remind me of the t-shirts available in Thailand, there’s a lot of humour on some of them with rather naughty images and graphics bordering on the risqué.

Now close to the the 18th century Protestant Christ Church (one of my favourite buildings in Melaka), there is a row of souvenir shops. They sell every souvenir imaginable from hats to fridge magnets, clothes to Angry Birds products! The fridge magnets are 3 for RM10 but at Jonker Street, the same magnets are 4 for RM10 so it pays to look around. I particularly liked the magnets of the seated Nyonya ladies and Baba men, beaded slippers and kebayas of various designs/colours.

Angry Birds merchandise are quite cute!

Along Jonker Walk, the shops are actually worth a visit. Although one might think the prices there would be higher than in KL, the contrary was true as there’s a shop there selling exactly the same type of floral designed shoes available at Parkson Pavilion but at RM50 cheaper than Parkson Pavilion. I didn’t take down the name of this shop but it’s on the first row if you’re approaching Jonker Street from Melaka’s most famous chicken rice ball shop, Kedai Kopi Chung Wah.

The shop also sells clothes, costume jewelry and these mini mannequins for dangling ear rings:-

My feelings for Melaka can be summed up via this magnet:-

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! I can feel the love when I look at Juniper’s Journal’s statistics everyday. Thank you to each and every reader for continuing to read and your support.
