Mesmerising Performance At Relaunch Of Encore Melaka

With Datuk Wira Boo Kuang Loon, Founder of Encore Melaka & CEO of Yong Tai Berhad before the 7.7 performance @ Encore Melaka

Last Sunday, I arrived at The Pines Melaka with barely an hour to spare to catch the bus from the hotel to Encore Melaka to watch the (relaunch) performance. Performances at Encore Melaka had taken a hiatus since the 2020 pandemic so it has been 4 years since daily performances ceased but now they are back with renewed energy and vigor and ready to show the world what they have in abundance. The forthcoming season promises an enthralling array of performances that combine history and modernity, technology and art into a magnificent showcase of lights and sound.

Before you even step foot into the theatre proper (where the seats are), you would be impressed with the size of the stage. Do make sure you visit the washroom before the show as you have to be seated throughout the duration of the show.

To recap, Encore Melaka is renowned for its grand performance that integrates music, dance, drama, and multimedia technology and has been well acclaimed since its debut. The immersive performance not only features the iconic scenes from the previous season but also incorporates new innovative elements that better illustrate the rich and touching stories of Melaka. This 70-minute feast uses creative technology to narrate the 700-year history and changes of Melaka, how it embraces ethnic diversity and impacts the lives of its people. The new season aims to bring audiences a moving experience that touches their hearts.

Before the performance, the dedicated people behind Encore Melaka delivered their heartfelt speeches, not without some emotion as it has been too long since they had to halt operations due to the Covid pandemic and other factors. Here’s to Encore Melaka getting back the crowds and achieving its aim to promoting Melaka’s tourism industry.

Thanks to Melaka’s rich history, heritage and culture, Encore Melaka can draw a lot of inspiration for their show by referencing Melaka’s past. Melaka is such a unique city as it has been a melting pot of cultures since it was founded by the Srivijaya prince, Parameswara in 1400. Melaka was named after the tree Parameswara was resting under while he was out hunting. Then in 1511, Melaka was invaded and conquered by the Portugese followed by the Dutch in 1641 and the English in 1826. So there are many influences from these foreign nations left behind in Melaka.

The Peranakan culture in Melaka is at least 6 centuries old as it originated from the 1500s during the Ming Dynasty when their princess was sent to Melaka to marry Sultan Mansur Shah. The princess’ entourage married the Melaka locals, thus creating one of the most unique cultures, an inter-marriage of Chinese and Malaya. In my opinion, Melaka was the original MM2H. Their traditions are still very much alive today and leave non-Peranakans in awe with their clothing and food especially.

After the performance, I posed for photos with the cast outside.
