Prior to being invited to ENCORE MELAKA for the media preview of their latest performance on 7 July 2024, I have to admit I was unaware of such a world-class theatre in my own country. With 2,000 seats, the theatre is equipped with the latest stage technology including brand-new lighting and audio & sound systems. The theatre boasts a 360° rotating auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,800, a 240m-long stage, over 1,000 water sprinklers at its water & mist stage, and six lifting platforms that ascend up to 6 meters, facilitating dynamic and seamless scene transitions. These features already promise a spectacular upcoming show not-to-be-missed.
The opening snippet had 18 elegant ladies clad in colourful & beautiful Nyonya kebaya come on stage, it was a scene from a Peranakan wedding. As most of us know, the Nyonya kebaya is synonymous with Melaka and it can transform any woman into the epitome of elegance. All the ladies on stage looked simply breathtaking.
The dancers in the rain were really dancing in the rain as there are those incredible water sprinklers. When we were given a backstage tour after the snippets, we saw puddles of water and it was slippery. Imagine being drenched by those water sprinklers from 80m above, that does hurt and it is cold! When they demonstrated the water sprinklers, it felt cold and really as if rain was gushing down. The mist effect was also phenomenal. It’s an incredible theatre and more people should know what a spectacular theatre we have which every Malaysian should be proud of.
