Jazzy Pictures, in collaboration with Oh’ Yes Co., Ltd and co-produced with Timeless Productions, proudly announces its latest co-production, Bluefish 청어, a raw and emotionally charged action drama exploring redemption, human connection, and the quiet strength of compassion.
Directed by acclaimed Korean filmmaker Lee Sang-hoon and produced by Joanne Goh, Bluefish 청어 brings together a dynamic cast led by Ji Seung-Hyun and Cecilia Choi. Cecilia, known for her emotionally nuanced performances, won the Best Actress award at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards in 2020 for her role in Beyond the Dream.
This marks Jazzy Pictures’ first co-production with a South Korean production team, with the film set to be shot on location in Busan and Yeongdeok. Bluefish 청어 is currently in pre-production and is slated for international release in early 2026.
A Story of Redemption Born in Silence
At the heart of Bluefish is the story of Gwang-su, a drifter with a violent past, who is unexpectedly transformed after a confrontation with Yeon-jeon, a mute milk delivery girl. When his aggression is met not with fear, but with silent compassion, Gwang-su begins to question the man he has become. As guilt gives way to tenderness, Gwang-su slowly begins to change, until a misunderstanding drives them apart. When he later discovers that Yeon-jeon is in danger, he must decide whether to walk away or stand up for something real. What follows is a powerful journey of sacrifice, redemption, and the quiet grace of human kindness in the face of brutality.
A Pan-Asian Co-Production Collaboration
Currently in pre-production and scheduled to begin filming in October 2025, Bluefish 청어 exemplifies Jazzy Pictures’ continued commitment to bold storytelling and regional creative collaboration. The film also marks a long-envisioned goal for the producers: a meaningful co-production between South Korea and Hong Kong, highlighting the strength of cross-border storytelling in Asia.
At the press conference, both the director and producer shared the challenges of casting the complex role of Yeon-jeon. According to them, finding the right actress who could embody both emotional depth and silent strength was no easy task. But when Cecilia Choi came into the picture, it became clear she was the right choice. “It’s not an easy role,” noted producer Joanne Goh, “but Cecilia brings an authenticity and quiet resilience that the character needed.”
“Bluefish is more than just a film, it’s a visceral portrait of broken people seeking light in unexpected places,” said Joanne Goh. “We’re excited to bring this powerful story to life and share it with audiences across Asia. More than that, we hope the film gives hope, light, and courage to people with disabilities, to show them they, too, can live independently and meaningfully, just like anyone else.” Lead actor Ji Seung-Hyun said, “I’m truly happy to take on this role, and I’m very much looking forward to the filming process and working together with Cecilia Choi.”
