The 2026 Urban Cruiser is an interesting take by Toyota on the compact BEV crossover genre: sharp headlamps with a serious “stare” embodied in that sleek hammer-head front, wrapped by elegantly chiselled front bumper. Added with rugged body contours and those rear pregnant wheel arches which convey a rugged and sporty outlook, especially finished in the metallic Pearl Bluish Black of the tester unit by Toyota Malaysia. This could very well be a lifestyle-oriented daily driver other than those boring, boxy hatchbacks.
Compared to the Suzuki e-Vitara, the Toyota arguably looks flashier, although underneath, these two cousins are nearly identical mechanically. FWD with a single motor pushing 174 PS (128 kW) and maximum torque of 193 Nm, enabling 0 – 100 km/h in a claimed 8.7 seconds. Which brings us to the value proposition. At around RM10,000 more than the Suzuki e-Vitara, the Urban Cruiser has to justify its premium largely through its Toyota badge, styling and overall package. Whether that extra money is worthwhile will ultimately depend on how much you value those differences.
But perhaps the Urban Cruiser’s strongest argument is its size. It is compact enough to stay nimble around town yet sufficiently spacious and practical for everyday family duties. For doing school runs, grocery trips and the occasional weekend escape, this is a practical lifestyle BEV: not too big, not too small, and easy to slot into daily life and also that parking space. The claimed 426km WLTP range is actually more believable amongst the BEVs I have tested until now. The other being the bZ4X, also a Toyota.
In fact, its computed range of 406 km on a full charge of 61.1 kWh was achievable in my one week of using this muscular looking junior crossover. For predominantly urban and suburban use, it has enough LFP juice for almost a week of normal driving, plugging in just once to recharge, at 7kW max AC charging. Behind the wheel, Toyota has sensibly retained that familiar ICE-car-like driving experience.
There is little of the lurchy, overpowered sensation that earlier generation of BEVs. Ditto the smooth brake regeneration. Power delivery is progressive, physical controls/switches are intuitive and the Urban Cruiser feels immediately identifiable and quickly adaptable for buyers making the transition from petrol cars.
However, the Achilles heel is its chassis dynamics. The rear suspension can feel rather hard and jarring, hopping over humps and bumps. Strangely for a multi-link suspension, it doesn’t quite offer the same level of composure and suspension rebound control as the simpler front MacPherson struts. Pushed successively into corners and you can feel the front end adapting and holding faithfully to the road while the rear isn’t quite keeping up – unsettled and struggling in a wooden manner. It doesn’t make the Urban Cruiser unpleasant to drive with just front occupants, but it does expose the compromises of a cost-conscious compact EV platform, highlighting that more needs to be done for the rear axle.
On the inside, the Urban Cruiser continues with the cheerful, youthful vibe. Lifted from the Suzuki e-Vitara, the dual-tone dashboard and flat top-and-bottom steering wheel, together with the nicely executed piano-black elevated centre console, give the cabin a modern, slightly playful character. It feels more lifestyle-oriented than utilitarian, a cue that Toyota is aiming for in its modern BEVs.
The standard JBL sound system is commendably good, while not as high-fidelity as the one found in the Camry HEV. Ultimately, the Urban Cruiser is not about being the fastest, sportiest or most sophisticated BEV in its class. At its asking price of almost RM200k, the Urban Cruiser’ biggest competitor isn’t the other Chinese BEVs out there. It’s possibly its own brethen, the bigger and more complete Toyota bZ4X.
