The National Museum Elevates The Concept Of ‘Heritage Rewang’ In Conjunction With The Chinese New Year Celebration

The Department of Museums Malaysia, through the National Museum, in collaboration with the Department of National Unity and National Integration of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, yesterday organized the Harmoni@Muzium Program in conjunction with the 2026 Chinese New Year Celebration at the National Museum Square. This program is a form of strategic collaborative manifestation between the community, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the corporate sector, aimed at celebrating the diversity of Malaysia’s cultural heritage in a harmonious environment.

This year’s organization focuses on preserving traditions through the ‘Rewang Warisan’ activities as well as the preparation of symbolic dishes such as Yee Sang and Tang Yuan. Although the term ‘Rewang’ is often associated with the Malay community, this concept of mutual cooperation is highlighted as a universal value to revive the spirit of community collaboration amidst modernization. In addition, the program also showcases the uniqueness of cultural assimilation through the preparation of Tang Yuan, which shares historical similarities with local sweets such as Melaka Onde-Onde.

By upholding the tradition of tossing Yee Sang, which has been recognized as a National Heritage (Intangible Heritage), the National Museum promotes the country’s unique identity to both domestic and international tourists. This effort to document living culture indirectly strengthens the role of the National Museum as a bridge connecting the history of the past with contemporary society.

The event was also enlivened by the presence of YBhg. Dato’ Haslina binti Abdul Hamid, Secretary-General of the Ministry of National Unity, accompanied by the Heads of Agencies under the Ministry of National Unity. In addition to the traditional food preparation session, attendees and visitors were also treated to a Lion Dance performance and the distribution of mandarin oranges, yee sang, and tang yuan as symbols of prosperity.

This program targets a total of 200 visitors from various segments of society. Among them are representatives from the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur’s Neighborhood Watch Group (KRT), Unity Kindergartens, and Museum Volunteers. Through the active participation of all parties, JMM hopes that the spirit of unity and understanding of cultural diversity will remain vibrant among Malaysians.
