UMW Toyota Motor Launches Vios Hybrid, Supported By Locally Assembled Battery Technology, To Advance Accessible Electrified Mobility In Malaysia

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) today marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s electrification journey with the launch of the Toyota Vios HEV and Vios HEV GR Sport, alongside the localisation of hybrid battery assembly at its Bukit Raja manufacturing facility.

The combined initiative reflects Toyota’s long-term commitment to making electrified mobility accessible, practical, and scalable for Malaysians, pairing a model the nation already trusts with proven hybrid technology produced closer to home.

Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor, said, “The Vios Hybrid represents an important step forward in making electrified mobility more inclusive in Malaysia. As our most accessible hybrid model, it reflects Toyota’s Best in Town approach by delivering advanced hybrid technology into a car Malaysians already trust and rely on every day. At the same time, our investment in local hybrid battery assembly reinforces our commitment to Mobility for All. By building key electrification capabilities locally, we are supporting national sustainability goals, strengthening local industry, and ensuring more Malaysians can benefit from reliable, high-quality hybrid mobility.”

Bringing Hybrid Technology into the Mainstream
Built on the familiarity, reliability, and everyday practicality of Malaysia’s bestselling B-segment sedan, the Vios HEV integrates Toyota’s proven Hybrid Electric System into a car that has long served as an entry point for first-time buyers, upgraders, and mass-market customers

By introducing hybrid technology into a model Malaysians already rely on daily, the Vios HEV lowers the barrier to electrified driving without requiring changes to driving habits, charging infrastructure, or lifestyle. This approach aligns with Toyota’s Multipathway strategy, offering a range of mobility solutions that balance efficiency, practicality, and real-world usability in support of Malaysia’s transition toward leaner transportation.

Supporting the Vios HEV is UMWT’s investment in a hybrid battery assembly line at its Bukit Raja facility, a strategic move that strengthens Malaysia’s electrification ecosystem while enhancing supply resilience.

Capable of producing up to 30,000 battery units annually, the facility assembles 97% of battery components locally, reducing secondary CO₂ emissions associated with import logistics while improving production flexibility to meet growing demand for hybrid vehicles. The high-precision assembly line features intelligent foolproof systems, automated inspection processes, sound-checker functions, battery performance testing, and full traceability throughout production, ensuring every battery meets Toyota’s global standards for Quality, Durability, and Reliability (QDR).

Beyond manufacturing capability, the initiative creates high-value employment opportunities, equips local talent with advanced electrification skills, and reinforces Malaysia’s position within the regional automotive value chain.

Efficient Hybrid Performance for Everyday Driving
Powering the Vios HEV is Toyota’s Hybrid Electric System, combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor generator and a compact lithium-ion battery designed to last the life of the vehicle. The electric motor delivers 80 PS and 141 Nm of torque, providing smooth and immediate response from standstill. Seamless switching between the engine and motor ensures intuitive acceleration, while the system produces a combined output of 111 PS with a NEDC Combined fuel consumption of 3.6L/100km. The self-charging hybrid system enables low-speed electric driving in traffic and uses regenerative braking to automatically recharge the battery, delivering quieter operation, improved efficiency, and lower emissions — particularly in urban driving conditions.

Comfort, Connectivity, and Thoughtful Design
Inside, the Vios HEV balances premium comfort with practical usability. A 10.1-inch Display Audio system and 7-inch hybrid-specific Multi-Information Display allow drivers to monitor energy flow, battery charge, and EV mode status at a glance. Hybrid-exclusive finishes, ambient lighting, and thoughtful packaging ensure passenger comfort and luggage space are maintained.

Exterior colour options include Platinum White Pearl, Attitude Black Mica, Silver Metallic, Celestite Grey Metallic, and Scarlet, while the Vios HEV GR Sport offers distinctive two-tone colour schemes with a black roof.

GR Sport: Hybrid Efficiency with a Dynamic Edge
For drivers seeking a sportier driving experience, the Vios HEV GR Sport combines hybrid efficiency with Gazoo Racing-inspired enhancements.

GR-specific aerodynamics, black accents, and distinctive badging are paired with GR-tuned suspension and electric power steering, delivering sharper handling and improved stability at higher speeds without compromising everyday comfort.

Inside, GR-exclusive elements include Leather Suede seats, contrast stitching, GR floor mats, a GR-branded steering wheel, and soft-touch interior accents that elevate both sportiness and refinement.

Comprehensive Safety as Standard
The Vios HEV is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense, including Pre-Collision System, LaneKeep Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor, and Auto High Beam. A 3D Panoramic View Monitor further enhances confidence during parking and low-speed manoeuvres. The model has also achieved the maximum 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating, reinforcing Toyota’s commitment to delivering safe and dependable mobility for all road users.

Long-Term Ownership Assurance
Both Vios HEV variants come with a 5-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty, along with an 8-year unlimited mileage hybrid warranty covering the battery, inverter, and power management unit. Customers may also opt to extend the hybrid warranty for additional peace of mind.

Driving Malaysia’s Next Phase of Hybrid Adoption
With the introduction of the Vios HEV supported by locally assembled hybrid battery technology, Toyota continues to lead Malaysia’s hybrid adoption by delivering accessible, efficient, and reliable electrified solutions, while investing in local manufacturing capability, workforce development, and long-term sustainability.

The Vios HEV is priced from RM103,900, while the Vios HEV GR Sport starts from RM109,900 for Peninsular Malaysia, making it Toyota’s most accessible hybrid offering in the market.
