There’s More Than Teochew Chendol Here

Like most Malaysians who dine out often, I know that there’s more good food to be had outside of shopping malls which cater to convenience rather than quality. After an event a few days ago at Sunway Pyramid, I was in need of a quick lunch and passed by Teochew Chendol which opened at Marrakesh in March.

Initially I thought they offered just desserts like chendol and ais kacang but no, there are light meals like popiah, assam laksa and Penang curry mee. Having been to a Penang resraurant at Ikano some weeks ago which left me less than impressed, I was highly skeptical about the Penang curry mee offered at Teochew Chendol but I noticed that two ladies had finished theirs so I went for it. You have to order at the counter but food will be brought to your table.

The assam laksa and Penang curry mee are priced at RM7.90 which can be considered pricey as the bowl isn’t that big. There’s a combination of yellow noodles and vermicelli but I am sure you can choose one or the other according to your preference. There’s long beans, fried beancurd pieces, cuttlefish, prawns which are very small and a dollop of sambal on the spoon.

I took my first bite and almost fell off my stool. Delicious! Strong fragrance and taste, not too spicy but had the right amount of oomph! Best curry mee I have had since I can’t remember when. The chili paste and spices they used for the soup base must be excellent as I wanted a second bowl.

I also ordered the chendol. Who goes there without ordering chendol anyway? The gula Melaka was not as concentrated as what you get in Melaka but then again, nothing comes close to Melaka chendol. I’d say this was an average chendol for RM4.90. I wouldn’t go back for the chendol but I’d definitely return for the Penang curry mee.

    1. The original shop is in Penang and very well established. You know Penangites have high standards when it comes to food so I am not surprised this curry mee is AMAZING!
