South Sea Seafood Celebrates 40 Years Of Culinary Heritage With The Empurau Feast

Celebrating four decades of culinary heritage and excellence, South Sea Seafood marks its 40th Anniversary with The Empurau Feast, a special dining experience dedicated to one of Malaysia’s most prized freshwater fish — the Empurau. Known as one of the most highly valued freshwater fish originating from the rivers of Sarawak, Empurau is prized for its rarity, distinctive texture and naturally rich flavour. More than a premium ingredient, the fish represents the richness of Malaysia’s natural resources and culinary heritage.

Through The Empurau Feast, South Sea aims to bring this unique Malaysian culinary experience beyond the local dining scene and introduce Empurau to international visitors seeking authentic and distinctive Malaysian food experiences.

FROM THE RIVERS OF SARAWAK TO THE DINING TABLE
For South Sea, the decision to spotlight Empurau during its 40th Anniversary is rooted in a simple belief: exceptional food should tell a story. The Empurau’s journey begins in the pristine river ecosystems of Sarawak, where its natural environment and diet contribute to its distinctive characteristics. Its firm yet delicate flesh and rich, clean flavour have earned it a reputation as a highly sought-after freshwater delicacy.

South Sea sees an opportunity to transform this appreciation into a broader culinary story — one that connects diners with the origins of the ingredient while showcasing Malaysia as a destination for exceptional and diverse seafood experiences.

“After 40 years, we wanted our anniversary celebration to be more than simply looking back at our journey. We wanted to celebrate what Malaysia has to offer and create an experience that can be shared with diners from around the world.”

A FEAST BUILT AROUND A RARE MALAYSIAN TREASURE
The Empurau Feast has been thoughtfully curated as a multi-course dining experience, combining South Sea’s signature seafood expertise with the flavours and traditions that have defined the restaurant over the past four decades. The menu features a selection of premium seafood dishes alongside the Empurau, offering guests a journey through different textures, flavours and cooking techniques. The dining experience forms part of South Sea’s 40th Anniversary celebration and reflects the restaurant’s continued commitment to sourcing exceptional seafood and presenting it in ways that honour both the ingredient and its origins.

A RECORD-BREAKING MILESTONE
Adding another significant milestone to South Sea’s 40th Anniversary celebrations, the restaurant is also recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records for “The Most Empurau Served in an Event.” The achievement marks an important moment for South Sea and further reinforces its commitment to bringing Empurau into the spotlight. Beyond the record itself, the occasion represents South Sea’s ambition to create greater awareness and appreciation for Empurau among both local diners and international visitors.

MORE THAN A MEAL — AN INTRODUCTION TO MALAYSIA
South Sea believes that food can serve as an important gateway to discovering a destination. For international travellers, experiencing local cuisine is increasingly an essential part of travel. Through Empurau, South Sea hopes to introduce visitors to a lesser-known side of Malaysia — one that extends beyond familiar dishes and explores the country’s diverse aquatic resources and regional culinary heritage.

The Empurau Feast is therefore designed not simply as a meal, but as an opportunity to discover the story behind one of Malaysia’s most intriguing ingredients. From the rivers of Sarawak to the table at South Sea, the experience connects origin, heritage, craftsmanship and hospitality in one dining journey.

THE EMPURAU FEAST — AVAILABLE UNTIL 31 OCTOBER 2026
Following the 40th Anniversary celebration, The Empurau Feast will continue to be available at South Sea Seafood from: 28 August – 31 October 2026. Guests are invited to experience the specially curated menu and discover the story of Empurau for themselves.
