Stepping into Taman Sari Brasserie at Hotel Istana Kuala Lumpur for the ‘Citarasa Ramadan’ Buffet last night, the first thing I saw was an array of delectable “kuih” that looked so irresistibly tempting. There were so many choices that I didn’t know where to start. We are indeed lucky to have Ramadan buffets in Malaysia as they offer so much variety and even those of us who aren’t fasting look forward to such mouth-watering feasts at the end of the day.
The Kerabu choices are endless here from Kerabu Isi Ketam, Kerau Betik, Kerabu Daging Tomato, Kerabu Udang to Kerabu Ayam Pegaga, there is something to whet everyone’s appetite for the main courses.
For mains, there are Istana’s signature dishes such as Local Style Smoked Catfish in Spicy Coconut Gravy, Butter Prawns, Braised Fish Head in rich local style thick curry with Tomato, Okra and Herbs, Indian Lamb Bandai Korma and more. I especially liked the Beef with Black Soy Sauce (Daging Masak Kicap) although not every piece was equally tender. The sauce is exceptionally good though and goes so well with the briyani rice that I had 2 helpings.
Check out the Chefs’ Live Action Stations where you can savour local favourites such as Char Kuey Teow, Lemang and its condiments, sizzling grill delights – Portugese style and the Carvery Station for Whole Roasted Balinese Marinated Lamb served with a selection of vegetables with sauces like Mustard, Black Pepper, Rosemary and Mushroom.
For me, the best thing about buffet at Hotel Istana is their awesome cakes and desserts. They are generally excellent and I can always find something I like enough to have a second helping of.
