Whimsical, cheerful, quirky and delightful prints inspired by the English countryside and nostalgia, vintage designs in modern colours, gorgeous floral and animal prints on products from tableware to aprons, mittens to bags, shoes to women’s and children’s clothes. It can only mean that Cath Kidston has arrived in Malaysia with the opening of its first shop at MidValley Megamall. It’ll be open to the public from 10am tomorrow but media got a preview this afternoon.

Cath Kidston was founded in 1993 and the very first shop was in Holland Park, London. Cath’s first print was Rose Bouquet, inspired by a beautiful, traditional rose print wallpaper she had seen in Wales. Using vintage fabric finds, she began creating her own products including cushion covers, cotton bags and a flowery ironing board cover all made from vintage fabric.

These very first Cath Kidston products were sold alongside second hand furniture and general colourful household objects that she customized. Cath made a mistake one day when ordering fabric. Instead of receiving 1500 metres on the roll, it was delivered already made up into duvet and pillow sets. With more bed sets than she knew what to do with, Cath set to work in turning duvet sets into cushions, aprons, washbags, coat hangers, bath hats and swimsuits. Now how’s that for innovation and turning a problem into a profitable venture? This turned out to be Cath Kidston’s first full collection and she received a lot of publicity thereafter.

Gradually, the shop received a lot of media attention which created a nationwide demand and the brand began t0 be recognized for its signature prints. Initially they were floral based but later designs such as spot and star and novelty prints such as cowboy became synonymous with the brand and formed Cath Kidston’s DNA.
