Last month, Canon Marketing (Malaysia) organized its ninth Canon PhotoMarathon competition in Sarawak’s capital Kuching where hundreds submitted creative photos, proving that the interest in photography is very much alive in East Malaysia. This weekend, the annual full-day competition came to Kuala Lumpur and Canon’s mission of unearthing talents concluded with the crowning of Malaysia’s 2015 PhotoMarathon champion at Quill City Mall, Kuala Lumpur.

The Canon PhotoMarathon 2015 Kuala Lumpur edition saw an overwhelming participation of 1100 hobbyists, amateurs and professionals photographers along with thousands of brilliant photographic renditions. In a race against time, contestants were required to capture the best photos of three (3) different themes, Culture, Wild Colour and Contrast which were announced instantaneously by Canon on the competition day itself.

Contending in a sea of creative submissions, Mohd Samsi Sumairi’s winning’s piece stood out and won the hearts and minds of the panel judges. “This is my sixth year participating in Canon’s annual PhotoMarathon and I am extremely thrilled to be able to walk away as the Grand Prize winner this year! Triumphing over thousands of creative stills is definitely an accomplishment and this experience has opened my eyes to the many different ways of taking and interpreting a picture. This competition is a great platform to develop skills and express art, so kudos to Canon for putting in the effort in making this challenge a yearly affair. Thank you, Canon, for the opportunity and for the fantastic prize!” said 48-year old Mohd Samsi.

The all-expense paid 8-day photo clinic to Japan was not the only prize Mohd Samsi took home that day. The government officer from Rawang also walked away with a list of big-ticket products comprising of a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, and products from partner sponsors SanDisk, Shiro, Fujitso, Adobe, Digital Camera Magazine and Japan Endless Discovery.

Close behind the shutters of Canon’s new PhotoMarathon champion are second and third place winners Ignitius Hai Yuen Kong, a sales and marketing executive, and photography freelancer Asmady Ahmad. Both winners also took home attractive prizes from Canon and its participating sponsors.
