Lunar Harvest at KCH by DONCE, a collab with ZUS COFFEE
Long before the Mid-Autumn Festival became synonymous with mooncakes, lanterns and family reunions, the season was closely associated with the Autumn Harvest. It was a time when farming communities gathered to celebrate abundance and give thanks for good harvest from months of hard work, dedication, and perseverance, while preparing for winter. In celebration of this, Kwai Chai Hong, together with ZUS COFFEE, present its 2026 Mid-Autumn art installation, Lunar Harvest (月满欢收), an immersive artistic experience inviting visitors to rediscover the timeless values behind the autumn harvest and the everyday blessings it brings.
Every grain of rice begins as a seed, nurtured by fertile land, favourable weather, and dedicated hands before making its way to the table. This enduring relationship between effort and abundance resonates deeply across Malaysia’s diverse cultural landscape. This harmony is beautifully reflected in our traditional folklore: while the Chinese proverb “粒粒皆辛苦” (lì lì jiē xīn kǔ) reminds us that “every grain of rice comes from hard work”, the Malay phrase “kalau tak habis makan, nanti nasi menangis” uses empathy to discourage waste and respect for labor. Together, these cultural pillars foster a foundational sense of gratitude, resourcefulness, and lifelong respect for labor from a young age.
“Every harvest begins with hope and ends with gratitude. The inspiration behind Lunar Harvest comes from a shared cultural belief that the harvest should be honoured and treasured, as it represents the culmination of patience, perseverance and the hard work that sustains our communities,” said Zeen Chang, Co-founder of Kwai Chai Hong. “From a tiny seed, every stage carries a story of care, dedication and hope. For us, Mid-Autumn is an opportunity to bring these values into the present and remind ourselves to appreciate not only the abundance we enjoy, but also the people, traditions and communities behind it.”
Conceptualised by art studio DONCE Fine Floristry, the alley transforms into a vibrant celebration of the harvest, brought to life through textured botanicals, rustic materials and colourful illuminated forms. Visitors are welcomed by a glowing pathway of rice-sack lanterns leading across the bridge towards the main Harvest Pavilion. Taking inspiration from a traditional rice mill, the pavilion is framed by layers of lanterns, rice sacks and harvest elements, set against an illustrated moonlit paddy field that evokes the warmth and abundance of the season. “Our inspiration began with the harvest itself — the journey from a tiny seed to abundance, shaped by patience, resilience and the harmony between people and nature. We wanted to take familiar elements of this journey, from rice sacks and woven textures to the traditional rice mill, and reinterpret them through colour, light and sculptural forms. The result is our contemporary expression of harvest under the full moon — warm, vibrant and rooted in traditions that remain familiar to us today,” said Delon Chai and Edmond Chua, Founders of DONCE Fine Floristry.
The installation also highlights the story of harvest that is unique to Malaysia — farmers have diversified their crops by cultivating cash crops such as coffee alongside staple crops, helping communities make productive use of their land while balancing food security with additional sources of livelihood, which helped shape our kopitiam culture. Just as every grain of rice carries the story of the hands that tended it, so does every coffee bean. From the growers who nurture each plant to those who harvest, sort and roast it, a single cup passes through many hands across the world before it reaches ours. Every cup is a reminder to be grateful for the work behind what we enjoy, and every cup brings shared joy “杯杯皆共欢” (bēi bēi jiē gònghuān) – celebrating the collective happiness experienced whenever Malaysians gather over coffee,
transforming a humble cup of coffee into an enduring symbol of national unity and shared abundance.

It is the same care that shaped our own local kopi line, ZUS Ngupi, inspired by Malaysian heritage and named after the everyday phrase ‘jom mengopi’ to bring the nostalgic comfort of our kopitiams and warongs into every day. Our collaboration with Kwai Chai Hong for Lunar Harvest is our way of giving thanks for that journey, and for the people, traditions and moments that shape our communities.
