Inaugural Pop Wasabi Awards 2026 To Spotlight The Next Generation Of Sushi Masters

Malaysia’s Japanese culinary scene is set to take centre stage with the launch of the inaugural Pop Wasabi Awards 2026, a new competition dedicated to recognising the country’s most promising young sushi chefs while celebrating the artistry, craftsmanship and heritage of authentic Japanese cuisine. Scheduled to culminate in a grand finale on 22 October in Kuala Lumpur, the competition will bring together six exceptionally talented chefs representing some of Malaysia’s leading Japanese restaurants. Contestants will compete by demonstrating the precision, technical mastery and creativity that define the art of sushi-making.

More than a culinary competition, the Pop Wasabi Awards aims to elevate appreciation for Japanese gastronomy while providing an important platform for emerging chefs to showcase their skills and deepen public understanding of Japan’s rich culinary traditions. According to Aldred Yaw, Chief Operating Officer of Sendo Ichi Seafoods Sdn. Bhd., the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to nurturing future culinary talent and supporting the continued growth of authentic Japanese cuisine in Malaysia.

“We are all looking forward to the Grand Finale of the Pop Wasabi Awards, which will take place on 22 October. Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing more exciting updates, competition details, and activities with members of the media and the public,” said Yaw, who co-founded Pop Wasabi Awards with veteran fashion designer Gillian Hung.

As one of Malaysia’s leading importers and distributors of premium Japanese seafood, Sendo Ichi believes that access to exceptional ingredients plays a vital role in raising culinary standards across the industry. Yaw said the company remains committed to sourcing the finest seafood directly from Japan. “As a dedicated importer and distributor, we source and air-freight premium seafood from across Japan—from the pristine waters of Hokkaido in the north to Fukuoka in the south.

“We also work closely with major and leading suppliers at Toyosu Fish Market in Tokyo, the world’s largest seafood market, to ensure that our customers receive the highest-quality seafood.”

The media launch also introduced renowned sushi master Sam Saito of Sushi Hibiki as Head Judge for the competition. Widely respected within the culinary fraternity, Saito serves as a Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador appointed by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), bringing significant international credibility and expertise to the judging panel. Additional judges will be announced in the lead-up to the competition.

The Pop Wasabi Awards is expected to become an annual platform celebrating excellence in Japanese cuisine while fostering stronger connections between Malaysian chefs and Japan’s culinary heritage. Yaw extended his gratitude to members of the press for their continued support, the distinguished judges for sharing their expertise, co-sponsors for believing in the vision behind the awards, Kiseki for hosting the launch venue and Ark Workshop and Lifestyle for sponsoring the event’s signature fragrance gifts.

He also expressed his thanks to Hung (aka Mama G) who helped to bring Pop Wasabi Awards to life. “Her passion and dedication have been instrumental in making this initiative a reality.” The Pop Wasabi Awards 2026 Grand Finale will take place on 22 October in Kuala Lumpur, where six of Malaysia’s rising sushi talents will compete for the inaugural title in what promises to be a landmark celebration of Japanese culinary excellence.
