5 Simple Ways To Prevent Iron Deficiency Anaemia In Children

Iron Deficiency Anaemia (IDA) is a common yet preventable condition that affects many children in Malaysia. It can impact their growth, development, and energy levels, making it crucial for parents to take proactive steps. Here are five easy ways to help prevent IDA and ensure your child’s health remains strong:

1. Start Early with Screening – Early detection is key to preventing IDA from becoming severe. A new initiative from Danone Malaysia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development (KPWKM), is offering free, non-invasive screenings for children across the country. These quick, painless tests at registered nurseries or daycares registered with the Department of Social Welfare Malaysia can identify early signs of anaemia, ensuring children get the help they need before symptoms worsen.

2. Boost Iron Intake with Everyday Foods – A balanced diet rich in iron is one of the best defenses against IDA. Include iron-rich foods like spinach, fortified cereals, beans, and lean meats in your child’s meals. For young children, fortified growing-up milk formulas, such as Dugro with Iron Active, can be excellent sources of dietary iron. These foods not only help increase iron levels but also support overall growth and development.

3. Support Iron Absorption – Did you know that pairing iron-rich foods with prebiotics and Vitamin C enhances iron absorption? Try adding fruits like oranges, strawberries, or even a splash of lemon juice to your child’s meals to help their body better absorb iron. A simple side of fruit with a meal can make a big difference!

4. Don’t Ignore Subtle Symptoms – Iron deficiency often goes unnoticed until it becomes more serious, but there are subtle signs parents should watch for. Fatigue, dizziness, pale skin, and cold hands and feet can all indicate that your child may not be getting enough iron. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to get them checked through a screening program.

5. Make Screening Accessible to All – Danone Malaysia’s new initiative also offers parents a convenient way to assess their child’s iron needs based on age and dietary habits through the online Iron Strong Questionnaire. This simple tool can give you peace of mind or prompt you to seek further testing if needed, including guidance on incorporating iron-rich foods into a child’s diet.

Preventing iron deficiency anaemia in your child is possible with these simple steps. Make sure to prioritize regular screenings and maintain a diet rich in iron and Vitamin C to keep your child healthy and full of energy!

Join the movement!

Recently launched by the Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri, this national initiative is designed to empower parents and caregivers to combat IDA. Take advantage of the free screenings and online assessment tools and be a part of this vital effort to ensure a healthier future for our nation’s children.
