UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) yesterday marked a significant milestone in Malaysia’s mobility journey with the introduction of battery electric vehicles, expanding the company’s electrified mobility portfolio as part of its long-term commitment to advancing lower emissions mobility. The move reflects Toyota’s continued Multi-Pathway approach to electrification, where multiple technologies work together to support the transition toward carbon neutrality while ensuring mobility solutions remain practical for how Malaysians move every day.
As part of this expansion, UMWT introduced three battery electric vehicles in Malaysia comprising the Toyota bZ4X, Urban Cruiser and Hilux BEV. Together, the models extend Toyota’s electrified mobility offering across passenger SUVs, urban mobility and commercial pickup applications, supporting the broader transition toward lower emissions transportation while addressing the diverse mobility needs of Malaysian drivers and industries. This reflects UMWT’s Move Your World philosophy, which focuses on developing mobility solutions that connect people, communities and industries across the country.
The launch event, held at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre, was witnessed by the Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Sim Tze Tzin, who said the introduction of electrified vehicles reflects the continued evolution of Malaysia’s automotive sector.
“Malaysia’s automotive industry has grown into a highly integrated ecosystem connecting manufacturers, suppliers, engineers and technology specialists across the country. As the global industry transitions toward cleaner mobility, investments that introduce new technologies while strengthening local capabilities will help ensure Malaysia remains competitive as an automotive hub in the region.”
Malaysia’s automotive industry has developed over decades through sustained collaboration between government, manufacturers and local suppliers, creating a comprehensive ecosystem that supports engineering capabilities, supplier development and high value manufacturing activities. The continued introduction of new technologies within this ecosystem reflects the industry’s ability to evolve alongside global automotive transformation.
Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor, said Toyota’s approach to electrification recognises that the transition toward lower emissions mobility must reflect how vehicles are used across different markets. “For Malaysia, mobility carries both economic and social importance. Vehicles here support far more than urban commuting.
They connect communities across long distances and support industries that rely on dependable transport as an essential tool of productivity. Electrified mobility must therefore be introduced at the right time, in ways that genuinely benefit Malaysians and support how people and industries move every day,” he said.
Leading the lineup is the Toyota bZ4X, Toyota’s dedicated battery electric SUV developed under the brand’s Beyond Zero philosophy, priced from RM 220,000.00. The model delivers enhanced BEV performance supported by improved power efficiency and battery capacity, enabling a cruising range of up to approximately 480 km while maintaining strong everyday usability. Built on a BEV-dedicated architecture, the vehicle integrates a newly developed eAxle system, advanced battery temperature management that shortens DC charging time, and a 14-inch multimedia display with enhanced voice recognition. These technologies combine with a spacious cabin and refined electric driving experience to deliver the quiet, smooth and intuitive performance expected of a next-generation electric SUV.
Following this is the Hilux BEV, which brings electrification to one of Toyota’s most recognised pickup nameplates, priced from RM 226,300.00. Designed as Toyota’s first global retail pickup BEV, the model extends electrified mobility into sectors where durability and reliability remain essential. Developed under a “Tough and Agile” design concept, the Hilux BEV introduces updated advanced equipment including a 12.3-inch TFT information display, Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) and Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM), alongside the latest Toyota Safety Sense 3 driver assistance technologies. The model is intended to support both fleet and individual users across industries such as logistics, construction, agriculture and government operations.
Completing the lineup is the Urban Cruiser, a compact electric SUV developed for modern urban lifestyles, priced from RM 198,000.00. Built around the design concept “Urban Tech”, the model combines strong SUV styling with efficient packaging and practical interior space suited for city environments. The vehicle features an integrated digital display system that combines the meter cluster and multimedia interface, allowing drivers to manage vehicle information, air-conditioning and other functions through a unified screen. Additional design highlights include an 18-inch wheel design, panoramic roof option, and a distinctive two-spoke squircle-shaped steering wheel, creating a modern and intuitive driving environment for everyday urban mobility.
The introduction of battery electric vehicles in Malaysia represents the next step in UMWT’s electrification journey, building on Toyota’s long-standing experience with electrified technologies globally.
