Thousands Gather To Light Up Bukit Bintang At Sungei Wang Plaza’s Largest Mid-Autumn Lantern Parade

Sungei Wang Plaza’s annual and most anticipated Mid-Autumn Lantern Parade once again concluded with resounding success, drawing thousands of people to Bukit Bintang to illuminate the streets in a spectacular display of light and festivity.

According to Mr. Joseph Teo, General Manager of Sungei Wang Plaza, “The Sungei Wang Plaza Lantern Parade has won the Best Experiential Marketing award from the Malaysia Shopping Malls Association (PPK Malaysia) for two consecutive years. This year marks the 9th edition of the event and the largest lantern parade in Bukit Bintang. It is not only a celebration that blends tradition with creativity, but also an occasion that brings people and the community together to share joy and warmth. As reflected in our theme, ‘Joyful Moonlight’, we aim to make each year’s parade better and more memorable for everyone.”
The opening ceremony commenced at 7:30 PM at the Sungei Wang Plaza Centre Court with an energetic dance performance by students from Catholic High School, Petaling Jaya. The ceremony was officiated by Yang Berusaha Ms. Yong Ee Chin, Undersecretary of the Tourism Policy and International Affairs Division, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), representing the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, Yang Berhormat Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, together with Yang Berhormat Tuan Fong Kui Lun, Member of Parliament for Bukit Bintang.

During the ceremony, Sungei Wang Plaza also launched its “Road to 2027 – 50th Anniversary Celebration”, symbolizing the beginning of an exciting journey towards its golden jubilee milestone in 2027.

The audience was captivated by a drum performance titled “Childhood” presented by students from Catholic High School, Petaling Jaya. The rhythmic energy of the performance stirred nostalgia and unity, rekindling fond childhood memories for many. As the familiar tune “Tong Nian (Childhood)” filled the air, the atmosphere brimmed with joy and innocence — reminding visitors that Sungei Wang Plaza holds a special place in their childhood stories.

The evening reached its highlight as a magnificent fireworks display lit up the skies of Bukit Bintang, officially marking the start of the largest Mid-Autumn Lantern Parade in Bukit Bintang. Guests and celebrities later boarded the KL Hop-On Hop-Off tourist bus, immersing themselves in the festive procession. More than 30 local celebrities joined the celebration, including 8TV artistes Owen Yap, Ley Teng, Orange Tan, Rickman Chia, Desmond Tey, Natalie Xiao Yu, Charlotte Seow, Minsley Chin, Victoria, Louis Loh, Yee Jie, Houson, Bryan, and Hana Xin Yi; 988 DJs Danny One, Cassey Soo, Chrystina Ng, Chloe Low, Ee Kiat, Piau Ming, and Jaydern; as well as singers Daniel Cheah, Danny Koo, Stella Chung, Nick Chung, Steady Gang’s Ah Ya and Hao Ren, and the dance group 1119.

Tourists from around the world also joined in the excitement, soaking in the vibrant sights of Bukit Bintang and celebrating unity, culture, and joy under the glowing lanterns of Kuala Lumpur.

Their colourful performances filled the streets with festive cheer, creating a warm and joyous atmosphere throughout the evening.

To share the festive spirit, more than 1,000 free lanterns were distributed to participants, allowing everyone to walk together under the glowing lanterns and light up the night sky. The event concluded at the Sungei Wang Plaza Main Entrance with a final performance titled “Lost Dream Continuation” — a touching act symbolizing perseverance and hope, signifying Sungei Wang Plaza’s continuous journey toward its golden 50th anniversary in 2027.
