One of the dramas I am watching (upon my friend’s recommendation) is VIP, the Korean drama starring the very famous Jang Na-ra. As it happens, I do like her acting having watched her in a Chinese drama years ago. The premise of this drama is a wife (Jang Na-ra) who works in a department store servicing VIP customers who make up the top 1% of their customers, receives a text message telling her that her husband is having an affair with one of her team members. Of course that is when her world starts to unravel and she starts to suspect one of the 3 women in her team.
As the story unfolds, we find out that each of the team members has a secret. We learn about their work appeasing the top customers, ensuring that all their demands are met and even about an influencer who does live streaming of their trunk show which showcases the department store’s products.
All quite interesting but I wondered how Jang Na-ra’s character could be so patient with her husband after finding out about his affair. She didn’t even kick him out of the house immediately and the worse thing is that she has to work with him in the same office every day as he is the manager of the team. In every scene, the husband’s expression is stoic and wooden which makes me wonder how any woman can fall in love with him. It’s like he has no other expression other than looking helpless.
The female characters in this drama are more interesting as they each have something to hide, some conflict in their lives. I did root for Jang Na-ra’s character but I can’t understand why she couldn’t be more forceful in demanding her husband reveal the woman he was having an affair with. Instead of losing concentration at work and the revelation taking a toll on her life, she could have demanded that her husband reveal everything in one sitting instead of letting things simmer to boiling point. I’ve still got 6 more episodes to go, by now the identity of the mistress has been revealed and I guess it is time for Jang Na-ra’s character to take some sweet revenge.
