Celebrating The Spirit Of Artistry: Royal Selangor Marks 140 Years Of Timeless Journey

Royal Selangor celebrated its 140th anniversary with a milestone event at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, launching a year-long campaign. The occasion was officiated by Yang Berhormat Tuan Khairul Firdaus, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture of Malaysia, reaffirming the brand’s cultural significance.

Street Art Meets Pewter Gallery

Blending contemporary expression with tradition, renowned graffiti artists Abdul Rashade (@abdulrashade), Iskandar (@siek27), and Adi Azwan (@wise.wan) of Wise Works Collective created a striking mural. This evolving artwork narrates the Royal Selangor story from 1885 to 2025, reinterpreting its history through bold, modern artistry.

The Return of the Kombi

A nostalgic highlight was the restored vintage Kombi van—a tribute to Royal Selangor’s pioneering spirit. In the 1960s, the second-generation founder’s wife personally drove a Kombi to deliver products to Seremban, a rare feat for women at the time. This symbolic vehicle now stands as a testament to
resilience and innovation.

A Story Told Through Time

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Spirit of Artistry: A Timeless Journey exhibition showcases key moments in Royal Selangor’s history, tracing its evolution from Malayan Pewter to a global name. Vintage brochures, campaigns, and archival materials offer insight into the brand’s identity, while a special gallery pairs modern designs with historical elements.

The exhibition highlights Royal Selangor’s brand evolution, from Malayan Pewter to the global name it is today. It showcases vintage brochures, campaigns, and materials that have shaped its identity, alongside a special gallery pairing modern designs with historic elements.

Adding a personal touch, the exhibition features historical store signage dating back to 1911 and the desk of second-generation founder Yong Peng Kai, where pivotal decisions were made. Visitors can also spot hidden “easter eggs” in campaign imagery—subtle nods to the past woven into the present.

Honouring the Past, Shaping the Future

As Royal Selangor embarks on its 140th year, this milestone is more than a celebration—it’s a tribute to the generations of artisans, visionaries, and collectors who have shaped its journey. With a legacy built on craftsmanship and innovation, Royal Selangor continues to evolve, bridging tradition with modernity. The year-long festivities serve as both a reflection on the past and a bold step into the future, reaffirming its place as a global leader in design and heritage.
