The School is bringing a slice of Japan in summer to you. The 2-day Tanabata Matsuri Cultural Festival will bring you the sounds, rhythms and colours of Japanese music, food and festival traditions.

The festival revolves around an ancient love story about the Princess and the Cowherd, who could only meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar. Tanabata celebrates a number of different concepts – including love, hope, playfulness and beauty, all while explaining the constellations. Visitors of all ages can experience this cultural festival on 7th and 8th July 2018 at The School by Jaya One, from 11am to 6pm daily.

In Japan, people generally celebrate this day by writing wishes, sometimes in the form of poetry, on tanzaku, small pieces of paper, and hanging them on bamboo, sometimes with other decorations.

The bamboo and decorations are often set afloat on a river or burned after the festival, around midnight or on the next day. The 2-day event will have The School transformed into a Japanese themed setting, ideal for family photo taking.

There will be various highlights – a Yukata kids couple fashion walk by Amber Chia Academy, Ikebana workshops & exhibition, yukata dressing, origami and furushiki classes, sushi making classes, tea ceremony performance, Kanzanshi workshop and Classical Dances. The festival is supported by the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia and the Yaezakura Japanese Traditional Music & Dance Group.
