Many underserved communities are facing challenges due to the lack of computers and laptops that have become commonplace in life today following the surge in reliance on technology during the pandemic.

Realising they could make a difference, four local hospitals in the Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care (RSDH) group recently donated 320 used computers and laptops after they were refurbished to become almost new again.

With many used electronic devices destined for landfills, RSDH’s corporate social responsibility efforts to repurpose and donate not only make an impact on Malaysians from all walks of life, it also contributes towards protecting the environment.

Peter Hong, Group Chief Executive Officer of RSDH, said “With every sustainability measure we take, the Group strives to ensure it has a positive effect on people, communities and the environment. By recycling these devices instead of discarding them, we can give back to society while reducing our carbon footprint. Moreover, with cost of living on the rise, this initiative can directly benefit those who are unable to afford such devices that have become such an essential part of everyday life.”

The hospitals involved were Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC), Ara Damansara Medical Centre (ADMC), ParkCity Medical Centre (PMC) and Bukit Tinggi Medical Centre (BTMC).

SJMC’s digital donation went to a total of 142 beneficiaries. Among the recipients were Shelter Home for Children, House of Joy, Ractar Orphanage, Lighthouse Children Welfare Home, Persatuan Kebajikan Wen Hua Kuala Lumpur as well as Rumah Aman Children’s Home which has 40 children aged between 6 to 17.

Spokesperson from Rumah Aman, Abang Arizuan bin Abang Arabi, said, “This donation from SJMC will benefit the children greatly in the long run by aiding in their education and learning processes. Our profoundest gratitude to the hospital for thinking about our children, giving back to the next generation, and making sure no one in the community is left behind.”

Meanwhile, PMC collaborated with Budimas Charitable Foundation to distribute the devices to schools and libraries under the foundation’s care, including two schools in Negeri Sembilan, namely Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) Ladang Tampin Linggi and SJKT Ladang Regent.

The Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer Anne Rajasaikaran said, “We would like to give a big thanks to PMC for donating 30 laptops and 45 desktops. We are confident that these useful devices will make a huge difference to the children and support them in their journey of learning.”
