Waitrose Lemon & Garlic Couscous

Many years ago, Waitrose outlets in London were my favourite grocery haunt. There’s so much choice of quality products there as anyone who is familiar with Waitrose will agree. It was such a pleasure to walk from aisle to aisle checking out products which were then unavailable in Malaysia.

Of course things are different now and we can find Waitrose products in supermarkets such as Cold Storage. On an impulse, I purchased a box of Waitrose Lemon & Garlic Couscous as I love couscous and it’s been a long time since I’ve had any. Couscous is a bit like our famous nasi briyani because you can eat it on its own but couscous does taste even more delicious with lamb stew.

With an ingredient like lemon in the couscous, you can expect it to be tangy and since it also has garlic in it, I knew it was going to taste delicious without any side dish. There are also some dried herbs in the mix so that’d definitely add to the flavour.

The instructions couldn’t have been any more simple and uncomplicated as it just called for 200ml of water and either 2tsp of vegetable oil or a knob of butter. I chose a knob of butter as I figured it’d be even more aromatic that way. Add the contents of the sachet, bring to the boil and remove the pan from the heat. Leave it to stand for 5 minutes and then return to the heat for 1-2 minutes, fluffing the grains with a fork.

It was a perfect instant couscous, much healthier than instant noodles for sure. There was so much of it that I couldn’t finish it (I made it for breakfast) and kept some in the microwave for lunch. I can taste the lemon, garlic and herbs and it is worth the RM7 for 110g (it’s only 93p in the UK *sob*!). It may be expensive here but it’s too good not to be a repurchase. It contains no artificial colours or flavourings and is suitable for those avoiding eggs, nuts and soya.
