Juniper
Continuing our valley-hopping in Cappadocia, Turkey while touring with ikhlas.com, our last stop for Day 3 before heading back for a much-needed rest at our hotel (some opted to get off the bus at the city centre for a walk), was Pigeon Valley. It is so named for the man-made pigeon houses carved into the rock formations centuries ago.
This is quite a sight to behold as there are thousands of pigeon houses carved into the soft volcanic rock. People used to collect birds’ droppings to use as fertiliser. The valley is home to other bird species, not just pigeons. There’s a small souvenir shop overlooking the valley and they sell accessories such as carves and socks at reasonable (non-touristy) prices.
